Understanding Traditional and Implant-supported Dentures

Dentures can help patients with missing teeth restore full form and function to their smile in one treatment. Drs. Daniel P. Duggan, John E. Seylar, and Nellab Hashimi use digital imaging and high-quality materials to design dentures that complement your facial features and help you regain self-confidence. Our office in Bay Shore, NY, can also perform dental implant surgery and convert traditional dentures into implant-supported dentures.

If you already own a set of dentures, we can convert your dentures into implant-supported prosthetics.

Advantages of Dentures

If you are missing most or all of your teeth, dentures can help you restore both function and aesthetics to your smile.

Restored Function: Patients with missing teeth are often forced to eat soft foods or have difficulty chewing due to tooth loss. However, dentures can restore your biting force and allow you to eat your favorite foods once again. Missing teeth can also impact your ability to speak properly. Dentures can help patients speak with confidence.

Restored Aesthetics: In addition to their functional benefits, dentures can help patients with missing teeth feel confident in their smile. Missing teeth can cause changes in your facial composition. Dentures can help fill in the soft tissue around your mouth and give you a more youthful appearance.

Crafting Your Dentures

During your initial consultation, we will conduct a full oral health evaluation to determine whether partial or full dentures are the best option for your restoration. Instead of using traditional putty impressions, our office obtains digital impressions of your smile using the iTero Element intraoral scanner.

Your digital impressions are then sent to an offsite lab, where your custom dentures will be fabricated. If you would like to “try on” your dentures before committing to treatment, you can also choose to have wax-ups made. These models will resemble the end result of your treatment to help you visualize your results and feel confident about your decision.

Traditional vs. Implant-supported Dentures

Although conventional dentures are a great option for patients who are missing several or all of their teeth, we also offer implant-supported dentures to give you added comfort and confidence in your smile.

Comfort: With implant-supported dentures, you will never have to worry about your dentures slipping or falling out while you eat or speak. Instead of using natural suction and adhesives, your dentures will be securely fastened to your dental implants. Implant-supported dentures rest on your implant posts instead of directly on your gums, which helps to prevent irritation and damage to the underlying soft tissue.

Confidence: Since implant-supported dentures will never move out of place and are not made of plastic, they are considered more natural looking than conventional dentures. Additionally, dental implants provide direct stimulation to the jaw bone and can help prevent bone loss, allowing you to maintain your full facial features.

If you already own a set of dentures but want to enjoy the benefits of implant-supported dentures, our office can also convert your dentures into implant-supported prosthetics.
